On May 12, 2016 (local time), Seoul was selected as the venue for the World Forestry Congress, supported by the consensus of the Council of State in the 155th FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization) Board of Directors held in Rome, Italy. 2021 A scene taken by the Korean delegation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock.

The 15th World Forestry Congress (hosted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization) will be held in COEX, Seoul in 2021.

The World Forestry Congress (WFC) is the largest international conference on forestry, sharing experiences and knowledge about forests, forest conservation and management, and social, economic and institutional issues. It is hosted by the FAO every 6 years on a continental basis.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Forestry, Seoul was selected as the venue for the World Forestry Congress, supported by the Consensus of the Council of the United Nations (FAO) Board of Governors of the 155th FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization)

In the Asia-Pacific region, the World Forest Congress has been held for more than 40 years since 1978.

As a result, Korea has attracted not only the UN Convention on the Prevention of Desertification and the Convention on Biological Diversity, but also the World Forestry Congress, the largest international conference on forests and the environment.

The United Nations' three major environmental conventions are the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD), and Korea is the 10th United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification And the 12th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity ('14, Pyeongchang).

Korea submitted a proposal to the FAO Secretariat in April 2016, and then moved around the world. In July, the FAO Forestry Committee announced a proposal to host the General Assembly in Korea.

The FAO Committee on Forestry is held every two years as a meeting to periodically review global forest-related issues and to agree on recommendations for the establishment and implementation of mid- and long-term forestry programs

In fact, Korea 's strength is that our miraculous success story of greening the country, which has made the mountains of the country bare in the past, played a major role in attracting the General Assembly.

In addition, the 2021 World Forestry Congress was a successful example of collaboration among related ministries, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock and the Ministry of Forestry cooperated closely to engage in active diplomacy to gain support from FAO member countries.

At that time, we had been fiercely competing with Italy, and Italy's decision to withdraw from the FAO board of directors was finalized.

'Korea is a model country that succeeded in forest regeneration in the world.

Half a century ago, at the end of the Korean War, the mountain was completely naked like Haiti today.

Since the 1960s, Korea has begun to plant forests, with millions of people working together in villages, planting trees all over the naked mountains.

As a result, Korea is now filled with 15 million acres (6 million hectares) of which 65% of the country is covered with forests.

When I visited Korea in November 2000, I was able to enjoy the joy of a scene where the mountain was reborn with a dense tree that was untouched until a generation ago. "

In 2011, Dr. Lester Brown, world-wide environmental expert, published the book "World on the edge", which evaluated Korea's forestation project.

Since the beginning of 1970, we have planted 2.8 million trees, 2.42 million trees, and 42,000 trees everywhere through the 'Chisan Greening Project' Green mountain 'to change the history of the forest.

The World Forest Congress, which is held every six years, is an international conference that discusses forest conservation and economic and social utilization of the planet. It is also called "Forest Olympics".

It is necessary to thoroughly prepare for the general meeting to reaffirm the strength of the Republic of Korea by sharing the experience of successful forest restoration and reestablishing forest values.

In the future, the Korean government plans to inform the world about the success of our forest greening through the World Forestry Congress, which will be held in Seoul in 2021, and to plan a sustainable future vision through strengthening international cooperation in forestry.
